Problem

When Stripe released Stripe Payment Links - a no-code, Stripe-hosted checkout merchants could add without a developer - adoption spread fast. Leads kept asking whether the platform could support it, and without that support we were missing the large share of prospects who already had Payment Links on their site and wanted an affiliate program on top of it.

Finding

Stripe’s documentation confirmed that Payment Links accept URL parameters, and that client_reference_id is one of them - so the affiliate tracking ID could ride into the Stripe-hosted checkout with no backend and no platform change.

Resolution

I wrote a small script that reads the visitor’s referral/tracking ID and appends it to the Payment Link as the client_reference_id URL parameter, so the hosted checkout records it automatically. The first version leaned on jQuery; I then refactored it to dependency-free vanilla JavaScript so it needed no libraries at all. The result stayed true to the no-code promise: the merchant copies the snippet, pastes it into their site, and they are done.

Impact

Before the platform officially supported Stripe Payment Links for conversion tracking, this no-code snippet let the large majority - roughly 80-90% - of Payment-Links merchants set up their affiliate program themselves. Even after official support shipped, the method still stands as an alternative when a merchant’s CMS or website builder cannot accommodate the official route.
